AIKIDO

  • Aikido, known as the art of peace, is a martial art that focuses on teaching the student to seek (and find) harmony in their lives.  This style is considered to be "soft style", meaning that it does not primarily rely upon the use of strikes to affect self defense techniques.
  • Aikido was originally developed as an art for unarmed defense against sword attacks where strikes are often quite ineffective.  The accomplishment of this seemingly impossible task requires great foresight into the direction and timing of your opponents attack.  This knowledge requires the development of great internal strength (ki) and an intimate connection between mind and body to move and defend without the interference of thoughts and emotions.
  • Aikido seeks to act rather than to react.  Meditation and emotional control are major forces in the development of Aikido.  This style concentrates on Ki development, which is the ability to create great force and power through the harmony of mind, body, and spirit working in unity.
  • Although Aikido is often not thought of in terms of being applied as a full contact martial art, it is imperative that Aikido students do not cooperate or help one another to "make" techniques work but rather learn to apply techniques effectively such that no cooperation is needed.
